Books of the Month - Sold on Commission: Brian Walton's "London" 17th Century Polyglot Bible

We have been honored to be contacted by some new friends of the store who have entrusted us to sell their rare and significant Bibles from the 16th and 17th centuries. We thank this wonderful couple for entrusting us with their treasured possessions and for agreeing to allow us to sell their books on commission. We are normally reluctant to take books on commission because it can be a vexing process for both buyer and seller, however in this case it's been a wonderful opportunity for us to deal in some of the finest printed matter in the world.

That being said, we recently sold an incredible set of Brian Walton's Biblia Sacra Polyglotta dating from 1654-1657. These six volumes comprise one of the most significant polyglot (multi-language) Bibles of the Early Modern Period/Era because they were the first to include Ethiopic and Persian. These volumes contain the translation of the Bible in 9! languages commonly used in the 17th century. The set we sold was in need of re-binding but contained all all 2,938 leaves originally printed. The first volume also contained the most beautiful plates I have seen in the seven years I have been directly dealing with books. Some photos are attached below. Again, these books were an incredible glimpse into a different era of human history and we were fortunate and honored to have been entrusted in the task of selling them for their rightful owners. We are happy to say that they have been sold to a very serious Bible collector and scholar and we thank all of the parties involved in the transaction.

New Book of the Month

I think that once a month I will post photos and a description of one of the most interesting books we have in the store, and here is the first of those descriptions.

We recently acquired a book which made my Father swoon, as it is absolutely of his generation. A couple brought in a copy of "George Gershwin's Song-Book", which is a great book for us to have in any state, but this copy is quite special. It was owned by a Hollywood songwriter who won multiple Oscars for his movie scores. During the course of his life he acquired this book, which was signed by George Gershwin himself, along with the famous illustrator Constantin Alajalov (who added a whimsical face next to his signature) to Lucia Davidova, who was one of the closest friends of both the choreographer George Balanchine and the composer Igor Stravinsky. This is a marvelous piece of American musical history, and quite a find for us. The dustjacket is in poor condition but almost impossible to find regardless, which is just the icing on the cake.

We are happy to deal in books which are rare and significant and hope that you will stop by to visit and perhaps even purchase one of them soon. Amazing Car Brochures from the 1920s-50s

We now have an incredible collection of vintage car brochures dating from the 1920s-50s. There are two full boxes of material, most of which are for American brands of the day including Ford, Buick, Chevrolet and many "orphans" such as Hupmobile, Jordan and many others. Please take a look at the photos below- these are fascinating for me to look at and would be for anyone interested in vintage printing techniques or those involved in advertising and messaging- the graphics and copy are incredible. As the retail world has changed with the advent of the internet, we have done our best to make ourselves visible to the bibliophiles around us. We have been successful in getting our website listed towards the top of results for used and rare bookstores here in Portland, but it would really help us if those of you who have visited our store could leave us positive reviews- they will register with Google and other search engines and help provide us with a stronger online presence, which in turn means that we will have better books and more customers to interact with on a day to day basis (that's a good thing). We returned from the Rose City Used Book Fair with a bounce in our step and feeling good about business and things in general. Thank you to everyone who came by to visit, and thank you to all those who purchased things from us this year. We did a better job of bringing books which stood out, though I'm surprised that all of the kids books with beautiful dustjackets didn't sell- in fact, not a single one of them did. In any case, we still have a great bookstore full of stuff and we welcome you to come in to take a look some day. New Featured Books on the website

I've noticed that it's not terribly difficult to upload photos of our books to our personal website, so I will begin to do so for the best books that we have- I hope to have photos of all of our books priced above $100 listed within a couple of months (let's see how I do). It's a Christmas Miracle!

We have finally gotten around to clearing out our large glass case which has been the holding place for all of our most rare books for the last 30 years. Unfortunately for the last 5 it has been very difficult to get an idea of what we actually had for sale in there as it was overcrowded and disorganized. After spending a couple of long hours working on it yesterday, things have now changed. I have cleared out the rare works of academia which it is unlikely anyone will purchase on a whim, re-organized the books and most importantly positioned things so that nearly every book is now able to be seen clearly. We encourage you to come in to see what we have, as we have been purchasing some new items such as a First Edition of Kerouac's Dharma Bums, important Ansel Adams books of photography, a rare Hemingway edition of Fiesta, a sixth printing of Joyce's Ulysses published by Shakespeare and Co, along with many others. We Finally Reveal Our Pretty Faces!

After being online for 7 years we thought we would finally post a photo of ourselves to let any of our internet customers see who they have been or could be dealing with in the future. As we've mentioned, this is a family owned business and my Father and I are the only two people you will be dealing with if you call us. The photo above was taken at the beach last year and though we both have stoic expressions on our faces I think it represents us fairly. The perfect gift for long-time Blazers fans!!! Rip City!!!!

We have a limited number of sets issued by Bank of America during the 1991-92 season featuring the great Blazers players of the early 90s. I was born and raised here in Portland I can remember screaming my head off rooting for them against the Bulls this year. It was a tough loss but these are great conversation pieces and basically a must have for any serious fan of the Blazers. Each set contains five lithographs, each featuring a different Blazer player in action on a bright colorful background. There is one for Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Kevin Duckworth, Jerome Kersey and Buck Williams. As I said, we have a limited number of sealed sets that would be the perfect gift for any Blazers fan, including yourself. All of my friends love these and we have already sold 5 or 6 sets so come in to buy one if you're interested because I don't know how long we will have them. Thanks for looking at our blog and we are happy to be posting some good news about the store- we are moving higher on the local search results for bookstores in town and have been able to acquire some high quality books that are improving our stock and exciting to deal in. We purchased a collection of high end fashion books, some of which are listed now and some photos of a book about Grace Coddington, the legendary stylist at Vogue, are pictured below. We've also purchased some beautiful sets from the 1800s which are in solid shape and extremely decorative, for any of you reading this who appreciate the finer aspects of book binding. We have 34 volumes of Walpole's writings bound in the same leather binding as the last photo, along with a beautiful 6 volume set of Smollett's Works from 1806. We have purchased books on Ferraris, samurai swords, Oregon history and lots of stuff in between. New Photography and Art Websites

So I have been interested in photography for quite a while, but only started taking pictures seriously in the last 9 months or so. My Mother was a photographer when I was younger, though she now focuses more on her Chinese art, but I've always been interested in the medium and decided that I would pick up a camera and see what happened. 9 months later I decided to put up a photography site to let people see my work and so I thought I would post the link to it here, in case anyone is interested in taking a look at it. Beautiful sets for interior decorators and bibliophiles alike

We have had some contact from local interior decorators looking for attractive books to buy to fill the needs of their clients. We also notice that some of the books we have in the store are quite attractive and would be to any bibliophile. Making them even more interesting is the fact that most stores don't carry many multi-volume sets and that we love the quality of antique publishers in lots of cases, thus I thought I would post some photos of books- some recently acquired and others we have had for years that I know someone out there wants. The first photo is of some limp suede leather volumes with beautiful gilt on the spines, and then there are some sets that I'm sure will interest some of you. Honestly we have approximately 20 other sets which might be of interest if you are looking for such attractively bound books, not to mention all of the single volumes in the store. One of our new customers is apparently a blogger, and a good one at that from what I can tell. Tiah came into the store a couple of weeks ago and wrote a very nice review of the store on her blog, which we are providing a link to here. We have had a recent rush of inquiries regarding one of our posts- the copies of Dante's Inferno from the mid-1800s. While we wish we had a thousand copies of these books to sell, unfortunately they were sold within a month of acquiring them and we haven't seen any similar copies since. We will certainly post photos of any copies we acquire in the future and we thank you very much for looking at our blog and website. It appears as though traffic on the blog and site have picked up considerably as we went over a year without any inquiries regarding these books and now have had many in the last two weeks. My first music tip- Diane Birch

So I'm interested in music, as we all are. I spent a while refining my tastes and seeking out things that I like/which interest me. When you come into the store I might be playing anything from Prince, Aretha, Etta James, Van Morrison, Frightened Rabbit or something more obscure. That being said, if customers are in the store I normally lean towards more accessible, less funky/distracting music. I am a big fan of all kinds of music and feel obligated to endorse a friend's music, in case you haven't heard of her. Her name is Diane Birch and she was born in South Africa before moving to Los Angeles and living in Portland off and on, which is where she met a friend of mine and eventually me. She put out an album last year on S-Curve Records (Tom Jones' record label- awesome). She's a very talented pianist, writes all her own music, and is the proud owner of a beautiful voice. Her website is www.dianebirch.com and the cd is entitled 'Bible Belt'. I highly recommend you checking out her site, cd and everything else you can find. She is an extraordinarily talented woman and a great person to boot. Last thing: She played a show here and in Seattle last weekend and I got to see both of them. I took the photo posted above, and I will embed a couple of videos, including one featuring her singing with Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates (awesome again!). You never know what you'll find in this place

I have been working here steadily for the last 3 years, and we have gone through many changes over that time. We have become more proficient at selling via the internet, including other third party sites like Amazon and Abebooks. We have upgraded the stock via acquisitions, estates, and paring back on some of the detritus that builds up over the years. My Father and I have become good friends again and enjoy one another's company. I've also gone through most of the books and picked out the strangest/most interesting things in my quest to learn more about books, the business and everything else. So it's now more rare for me to run across something that makes me smile and marvel at what we have tucked away in the many recesses of the store. However today I ran across a couple of things that made me do just that, so I thought that I would post them to let you get an idea of what you might find when you come into the store. I was looking for a book that had been ordered via Amazon and in doing so ran across a Photoplay edition of "Passage to Marseille", or "Man Without Country". This edition features Bogie, Humphrey Bogart himself, holding his trusty friend the cigarette and looking as distinguished as ever. I haven't seen the movie, but the photos on the front and back covers of the book make me want to. It's the kind of book you will never find in a corporate bookstore, and very rarely in any bookstore period. It's next to a similar book featuring Spencer Tracey and Katharine Hepburn on the front cover, with the title being "Keeper of the Flame". They are symbols of a bygone era. I also ran across an old issue of "The American Poetry Review" featuring selections from Pablo Neruda and a photo of the poet himself on the front cover. It dates from 1981 and I can't imagine how a fan of Neruda wouldn't want something like this. What I've noticed is that most people don't realize that items like these exist, at least the younger generation doesn't think about them, so I wanted to make a quick post about the strange and wonderful things you find when you have your nose pressed into a book all day. Huge Selection of Magazines- Perfect for Birthday Gifts, Conversation Starters, Decoration

As I've always been surrounded by old paper, magazines and ephemera I am mostly desensitized to the awesome things I see on a daily basis. At the same time, there are some magazines and images that are always going to catch my eye. I love magazines dealing with Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay, plus the old baseball magazines always offer a different view of celebrity and sport than we have today. The fashion magazines give us a different view of clothing, gender, aesthetics and everything else. Playboy and Playgirl do the same thing. A magazine from the 1950s is completely different than one from the 1970s. And we are lucky enough to have extensive collections of magazines dating back to the teens and earlier. Treasure Hunting/Railroad Magazines from the 1930s-1980s

In an effort to push some of the more esoteric and specialized stock onto you, the unsuspecting public, I'm posting here regarding our collections of treasure hunting and railroad magazines. We have hundreds of treasure magazines with titles like Lost Treasure, Eastern and Western Treasure, Treasure Search, etc. They are mostly from the 1970s and 80s, and I've included a photo here to give you an idea. The railroad magazines are titles like Railroad, Trains, Railroad Conductor, etc. They are from the 1930s-60s, with some later Model Railroader and similar titles thrown in for good measure. After a year and a half I am back again to give you a quick update on what's happening with the store. My Father and I have been getting along pretty well- his health is holding up and I am nearly recovered from a fairly serious concussion I suffered in January 2010. Since I last posted we have acquired a beautiful collection of academic books, 60 boxes of high quality volumes dealing with Ancient Greece and Rome, Mythology, Art, Philosophy, Primitive Societies and more. We have been selling a large quantity of those books online but encourage anyone to come in and browse our stock in the afternoons. I will try to post photos soon. We have also started a Google marketing campaign to let people know that we have rare books, magazines and ephemera. Also to emphasize that we also buy high quality books and pay cash- we are one of the few bookstores in town other than Powell's to do so. January was a great month for us because of back to school sales, and this year has started well, so we will cross our fingers that this year will hold up, as 2009 was quite slow for us, just as it was for everyone else we've talked to. We were featured in the Finder from Willamette Week!

It's obviously been far too long since I posted here, so I thought I would kick off the second half of the month with some good news regarding the business. We have recently been featured in Willamette Week's annual Finder issue, which lists WW's recommendations for local businesses. Not only did we receive a short and sweet write up, but I was shocked to see my own pretty self featured in a 2 page spread, showing our wealth of books and capturing the ambiance of the place quite well, if I do say so myself. I had completely forgotten that a very nice photographer had come in and mentioned that she was taking photos for the Finder, so when a friend mentioned that she'd seen me in the new issue I was taken aback. I had to wait until the next day to track down a copy, but when I did I was pleasantly surprised by how large and high quality the photo was. We thank WW very much, and hope that it encourages people to come visit us. For those who don't know, WW is the major free weekly paper in Portland which focuses on local news, art and culture.

Collection of Vogue Italia, 1969-79

We've recently purchased a collection of Vogue Italia, Italian Vogue, starting in 1969 and running through 1979. Most all of them are in good to Very Good condition, with some general wear, with some being fairly beat up and others being close to Fine. Vintage/Collectible Mens and Fetish Magazines, 1920s-50s

We've recently purchased a collection of highly collectible vintage mens magazines, including some nude studies from as early as the 1920s and running through the 1940s and 50s. While we've always had Playboys and some other related materials, this is one of the first times that we've acquired a large collection of truly collectible rarer magazines of this sort. Titles include Silk Stocking Stories, Black Silk Stockings, French Art, "Dawn: Eugenics, Art, Love", as well as others. We are in the midst of pricing these magazines, and can provide other pictures if customers might be interested in seeing what else we have. There were approximately 80 such magazines included in the collection, along with some other related materials.

New acquisition of Blazers, Ducks and Beavers Sports Memorabilia

We've recently acquired some high quality programs and media guides for the Portland Trailblazers, the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers. We have the early media guides from the 70s, almost all in extremely good condition and including the first years and the championship year. We also have some programs from the first couple of years, and football programs for UO and OSU which date from 1945-1985, with the majority being pre 1965. They are almost all in extremely good condition, at least Near Mint and very bright and clean. I'm including some pictures for these as well, and if you have any questions about the games we have programs for, or any other specific questions, please let us know. Beautiful old versions of Dante's Inferno acquired (and sold)

*****UPDATE: BOTH OF THESE COPIES HAVE SOLD, AND WERE SOLD QUICKLY AFTER THEY WERE ACQUIRED. We have had almost a dozen inquiries about these books in the last two weeks, after not having any for over a year. This must mean that we've been listed somewhere new and are getting more traffic; thank you very much for looking at our website and blog but unfortunately we haven't seen any similar copies at all since we sold these two, and to be honest it appears as though the price has increased since then, to between $300-400. We've recently come into possession of two very old and very beautiful versions of Dante Alighieri, both of which date to the latter half of the 19th century. One was published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. There is no date stated anywhere on the book, however it is the New edition, as stated. It is 13" x 10", bound in full leather with gilt accents. It's truly a beautiful copy of a very rare book, extremely difficult to find in this condition. It is also filled with black and white plates which were drawn by Gustave Dore. I'm including pictures of the book's cover and some of the plates.

The second book is an Italian version of the same book, dating from approximately the same era. The book is in a little worse condition, with some general rubbing and so forth, although I would hazard to guess that the book is in better condition than most of the copies you'll find at this point. It dates from approximately the same era, is the same size and also contains many plates by Dore.

We think that these are both very special books to be in possession of, and are sure that there are people out there who would be interested in them. New Architectural and Art Magazines, along with Auction Catalogues

A very nice family in Portland has recently provided us with an extensive collection of art and architectural magazines, along with fine Sotheby's and Christie's auction catalogues. These magazines cover a variety of decades and topics, but most are from the last two decades. The catalogues deal with jewels, Asian art, furniture and others. We haven't had a chance to organize very many of the magazines at the moment, however they are a great addition to our existing stock of such magazines. One of the things I've been working on as of late has been to organize our magazines, particularly our sports magazines and vintage men's magazines, including some pin up digests featuring Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, Jayne Mansfield and others. We also have a large number of vintage Sports Illustrateds, running from the first and second issues (which we have a number of), to approximately 2000 or 2002. I'm attempting to consolidate all of our rarer issues, along with all of the rarer periodicals we have concerning sports, fashion, the arts, men's magazines, etc. I'm attaching some photos of a couple of the issues we have which are very difficult to find. Most of them are sports magazines, but I will soon post pictures of the other magazines we have.

This is now the official welcoming party for this blog, which will be linked to our website, www.longfellowspdx.com, and which hopefully will become a place for us to keep customers and friends of the store in the loop regarding new acquisitions and our plans for the store. We are in the process of updating most everything about the store, if only because with both of us here, we now have more energy than only one of us would have. Nile, who's writing this, is now a regular fixture in the store and is intent upon making more people aware of our presence here in Portland. We think that we have a great store and we would like this to be a place that all book lovers need to visit regularly. Wish us luck with those things.
